For the past few months, I have been observing a quiet drumbeat of banning pot dispensaries on the lower Cape turn into a “Reefer Madness”-inspired stampede to hysteria. At the Orleans town meeting in October, I saw a mother weep over the prospect of her child having to possibly walk by a “pot shop” on his way to a local coffee shop, ignoring the fact that he’s currently walking by two liquor stores and three bars on his journey. I heard tales of the homeless invading our town, and images of towns evocative of Norman Rockwell hurtling toward becoming a scene from “Panic in Needle Park.” These scenarios are ridiculous, ill-informed and hysterical.
